Trauma Informed Yoga (April 2024) - In Person & Zoom
How is a trauma informed yoga class different from a "regular" yoga class? Bring your own mat!
This 3-hour workshop includes a short yoga practice, discussion among participants, and a talk led by trauma informed yoga instructor Kate Rice. Her perspective is that of a yoga instructor who has taught yoga to residents of homeless shelters, women detained at Cook County Jail, and sexual violence survivors. The workshop is primarily aimed at yoga instructors but all are welcome - mental health professionals with a yoga practice might also find relevant info. Please note this is a workshop about trauma informed yoga, and is not intended as a practice for those working through trauma.
Part 1: Intro and practice: participate in a trauma informed yoga class (bring your own mat please). The yoga practice will include both seated and standing postures, and not much weight-bearing on the arms. It's not a chair yoga class, but it is meant to be accessible to all experience levels and welcoming to those newer to yoga; folding chairs are available to those who may prefer to sit on a chair instead of the ground.
Part 2: Group discussion: How is a trauma informed yoga practice different than a "regular" class? Discuss with other participants your impressions based on the practice you've just done, plus other ideas of your own, then regroup for Kate's input on her approach and intentions.
Part 3: Mainly lecture: How do you get training beyond this workshop? What about setting up your own trauma informed class in a studio or other setting? Peruse manuals from trainings Kate has done, and explore some resources for program set up.
Space is limited. If your plans change, please request your refund prior to close of business Friday, April 5. Please note there are different tickets (same price) for in-person and zoom, and ensure you select the correct one.
Extra: meet and network with the other participants in this workshop, who may be excellent co-teachers or just knowledge resources for your future trauma informed yoga work.
